The most intense AFL season in recent years is coming to an end. There’s only a month left, yet nothing is still certain. Adelaide may have the lead, but it also has a run of incredibly tough games at home. The top is tightly contested, and no one can predict exactly what can happen.
This means that now is the perfect time to start preparing for the AFL grand final party! After all, even the Hawks who are currently in the 12th place have a chance of reaching the final.
There’s nothing more traditional than the AFL grand final party, and in Australia, traditions are followed. It doesn’t matter whether you like football or not, hosting or going to one of these parties is simply unavoidable.
So, how can you host the perfect party for everyone to enjoy, even those who are not that much into football? Let’s take a look.
Fire up the barbeque
If you’re the one hosting the party, you can expect a long day. The game traditionally starts at 2:30 PM, but you can expect your guests to show up even around noon. So, fire up the barbeque early if you don’t want to be cooking during the game. Anyone who shows up at 2:30 or later is welcome to eat … if there’s anything left.
Of course, the most important thing on this party will be a big wide-screen TV. If your TV is big enough, you have nothing to worry about. However, if you have a smaller TV, get a projector and a white screen, and you’re set.
If the party you’re hosting is big, and you expect a lot of people to show up, consider installing the projector in the living room and put your TV by the barbeque. That way you’ll be able to watch the game while grilling meat for that perfect girl that showed up late to the party and to whom you simply cannot say no.
Do you want your friends to tell everybody they meet how they’ve had a great time at your place and that you’re the perfect host? Then you should consider making ‘souvenirs’ for them.
Most graphic design companies offer affordable T-shirt printing, so you can make custom T-shirts for your guests. Print your name and a funny slogan on the T-shirts; you know, something like ‘’I got wasted like a bogan at Mike’s place’’.
The day of the final is going to be hot in many different ways, so you can expect to run out of beer in an hour or so. You can ask your friends to chip in and buy a carton of beer, or you can simply instruct your guests to bring their own drinks.
Getting a big fridge might sound like a good idea, but if you want everyone to remember the party, and reduce the chances of drunk friends hitting on your girlfriend, get a medium-sized fridge and let people take turns in cooling their drinks.
If you don’t have a girlfriend or a boyfriend, avoid inviting couples to your party. Single people want other single people. Of course, avoid inviting couples with children as well. We all know that children are the future, but you probably want to have fun during the party, and not pay attention to your behaviour in front of children.
Hosting a Grand Final party should not be taken lightly. It’s a sacred task in a way. Make sure that everybody’s having fun, but don’t be afraid to ignore your guests’ needs if the game is on. The footy is the most important thing.
